Idaho Wedding & Bob Dylan !!!

Back in august I was invited to go to my cousin’s wedding in Boise, Idaho and since this was my first time out there I was super stoked.  My aunt, cousin, and several family friends have been living out there for years so it was a perfect time to go visit.
Most of you guys know I hate flying and being in a dinky jet started to freak me out.  Fortunately, when we were flying from LA to Boise my uncles and aunties from Hawaii got onto the same flight and helped me relax.
Somewhere over Nevada….
After checking into our hotel we went straight to the wedding rehearsal dinner.  It was great to finally see where my cousin grew up and take in the wonderful nature around.  The air was clean, fresh and the parks were so chill.
Even made some new friends…..
Cooking up a big BBQ.  I ate so much on this trip it’s crazy….but it was worth it…haha.
The park was along the Boise River Greenbelt that flowed through the town and people would float down in inner tubes suntanning and fishing.  I heard it last for about three hours.  We didn’t get enough time to do it this trip but you know we’ll hit it up next time.
Congrats to my cousin Jessa and welcome to the family Dave!
We had some time before the late afternoon wedding to walk around downtown and check out the weekend street market and stores. I really enjoyed the people and the downtown setting.
The Boise capital building located in the heart of downtown.
They need these in HK to keep the rivers clean….
The day after the wedding my auntie Suzy took us to where she and her husband used to live up in the mountains about an hour outside of town.  So nice!
There were streams where people would go swimming and catch salmon to take home too.
Later that night I saw my favorite artist In the whole world BOB DYLAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was hands down the best show I’ve ever seen and experienced in my whole life.  When he walked out I started to get tears in my eyes and just seeing him so close playing some of the greatest songs ever was just mind blowing.  Since I was in the front row leaning on the barrier I wasn’t allowed to take pics cause of the security in front of me but someone next to me did so here’s my view for the whole show.  I swear he could see us right there.
This year Charlie Sexton was back and the band was amazing. I got there four hours early to get to the front barrier and stood eight feet away from Dylan the whole show.  This was my second time seeing him play (last time was in 2003) but over the years I just kept becoming a bigger and bigger fan so it was insane.  He opened with “Rainy Day Women #12 & #35″ so you know what was happening around me.  He also played some of my favorite tunes including “Blind Willie Mctell,”  ”Just Like a Women,” “Highway 61,” “Ballad of a Thin Man,” “Most likely you go your way,” and closed with my favorite song ever “Like a Rolling Stone”!!!
This is the view of the stage at Idaho Botanical Gardens.  It was in the field of an abandoned prison what a trip.  I was speechless after the gig and it really made me rethink how I’ve been doing music out here in HK and made me re-evaluate a lot of things.  What an amazing memory of my first time to Boise.  The next day we flew back to LA and San Diego, more about that in the next blog…..

Giant Robot Magazine Interview !!!

I’m super stoked to have an interview in the new issue of GIant Robot magazine (# 66).  It’s been one of my favorite mags ever and I’ve found so many of my favorite artists, bands, and comics just from reading them over the years.  So needless to say i’m totally honored to be in such a great publication and also be in the same issue as Daniel Day Kim (LOST), Bryan Lee O’Malley (Scott Pilgrim comics), Laura Ling, and my good friend Simon Birch.  If you get a chance pick one up at bookstores across the US or at HMVs/Metro Books in Hong Kong.
This issue has one of the coolest covers too!
The interview talks about my background, my music, and even my tats. The best part is that it’s in english so I can read it too..ha!
There’s also a full-page Alivenotdead ad featuring Wing Shya, Asia Eng, Race Wong, and myself.  Check it out and please support your local creatives!!

Dragon Boat Festival !!!

Two weeks ago we did a gig at TST for the big Dragon Boat Festival that was held in HK harbor. Unfortunately the live stage was a block away from the pier so we weren’t able to watch the races from where we were playing.  But we did have plenty of the contestants celebrating while we jammed.  Good times.

Got to use the new Les Paul Junior for the first time so I was stoked.  The P-90 pickup sounded great live and had a nice old school tone to it.
Always fun rocking out with Siu Ming and Masaki….and huge inflatable beers!
A bunch of the dragon boat crews were having a good time singing along and crowd surfing too.  Dope!

Dongguan Gig !!!

Last month I did a short set at BB Club in Dongguan.  It was my first time in that part of China and we had a great time looking around and making new friends.  Thanks to everyone who came out and supported.  Hopefully we’ll be back soon..
Check out the size of the advertisement for the show!  I’ve never seen a pic of myself that big before….so strange.
Everyone was singing along and getting pretty into it…stoked.
Even had security….felt like Kanye West for a second there.
Good times.

Milk Magazine Cover X Vans Shoes !!!

Today our Milk Magazine cover came out so if you get a chance please check it out.  This was my first time being on the cover of “book A” so when I got the mag I was pretty stoked. Also getting to do it with my good friends Sam Lee, Phat, and Kit was rad.  Big thanks to Lee Hawk and everyone at Vans/Milk for hooking it up!

Phat, Sam Lee, Kit, and yours truly!
Having a good collection of Vans myself I was glad to rock the new Sex Pistols’ slip-on. Special thanks to Johnson, Andrew, and Justin at Gibson Guitars for hooking me up the sweet Les Paul Junior.  I love the P-90s!
Sam Lee!  We keep missing each other between projects but we always have fun catching up. Actually, the last time we worked together was when we were filming the Roadshow skate diaries.  Also check out his clothing brand Subcrew.  Support!
Kit and Phat of 24 Herbs/LMF kicking it.  Check out their new Star World video at their blog page and also watch out for the new Ya Sei Mei tunes.
Chun Chai and Wai!  Definitely representing the best skaters of HK .  Chun Chai pretty much won every skate competition I’ve been to and Wai has been right behind him.  It’s inspiring to skate with these guys at Mei Foo & Chai Wan skateparks.
Vans’ new “OTW” line are a new take on their classic design with more attention to details and material.  Thanks for the blue pair.
Test shots of the individual pics…
Both photo shoots were lots of fun and incredibly fast.  Hopefully we can all work together again…
Thanks again to Lee Hawk, the Vans crew, and everyone at Milk Magazine for the support!

72 家租客 (72 Tenants) Movie !!!

Since I’m on a 4-6 month delay on my blogs (I have 5 more in my drafts folder that I’m trying to post within the next couple of weeks) it’s about time to post pics from the “72家租客” movie that I was a part of during Chinese New Year.  This was my first time being in a feature film and it was fun being casted with so many friends.  When Eric Tsang called I didn’t have to think twice about taking part so big thanks to him for a pretty cool opportunity.
I’ve been on movie sets before but its funny to be on the other side of the camera this time.
Most of the movie took place at a fake Mong Kok street complete with neon lights and billboards built at Shaw Studios.  Crazy!
Jacky, Vincy, HOCC, Toby, me, and the blue (younger) crew were the cellphone emplyees competing against Jacky Cheung, Eric, Maria, and their crew.
Finally got to catch up with Toby!  I first met her during the first batch of coliseum shows we did back in 2004.  Man time flies…
The full cast at the HK press con!  Jacky Cheung, Bernice, Bosco, Fama, and pretty much everyone you can imagine came out to support.
On our flight back from Singapore a couple of weeks ago Cathay Pacific had our movie featured in the inflight magazine.  Who’s that dork up on the third row?
Since I was traveling between San Diego, Las Vegas, and Singapore the week of the premiere I had wait for the DVD to watch the whole movie myself. Ha!

Hong Kong International Art Fair 2010 !!!

In addition to going to Music Matters I was also stoked to make it to the HK art fair the same weekend. This was my second year and it was cool to see over 150 museums showing pieces from around the world one place.  It was also great getting close and personal to stuff that was selling for millions of dollars a pop.  Craziness.
There was a lot of Yoshitomo Nara pieces this year and I was amazed at how big this piece actually was in person. The copy of it I have is the size of a postcard…ha!
They also had a custom box just like his “A to Z” and “SML” installations!
The giant “Lonesome Puppy” making friends.
Nara was there too!
Patrick and his favorite piece of the show.  This dish had a cool 3D effect and also distorted your voice the closer you got to it.  I think he helped sell this piece while explaining it to someone so he deserves a huge commission.  Pay up yo!
Masakatsu Sahie.  I have a model kit of one of his orbs but I’m too scared to build it cause I don’t want to jack it up.
Ai Yamacuchi!  The first time I went to the Giant Robot store was to see her show at GRLA. She even signed a card for me and drew a picture on it but I lost it…..aaaahhh!!!!
Damien Hirst’s pickled dove.
Julian Opie.
Another one of my all time favorites Ryan Mcginness.  I wish…..
Warhols.
Richard Prince.  Last time we saw his stuff in person was at the Serpentine gallery in London. Dope!
First time seeing David Choe pieces in the flesh.  I’m bummed I didn’t get to see his LA installation…it looked insane.
Simon Birch represent!  Simon just pulled off the biggest art installation ever to take place in HK and it got great reviews and feedback.  I’m stoked for him and he deserves a huge holiday after this week.
Cruising with Simon and Angie at preview night!

Music Matters !!!

Last weekend I got to hang out at the Music Matters conference and watch some pretty interesting discussions between some of the biggest promotors, managers, and music companies from around the world.  This was my first time at MM and it was cool seeing what people are trying to do to fight poor CD sales. It’s an uphill battle but many believe by focusing back on good music while trying to make things more accessible to fans things could get better. Between presentations there were also few artist showcasing their music including Altan Urag, Jully Black, Delhi 2 Dublin, and special guest Jason Mraz.

Mega promotors like Bill Silva (Bill Silva Ent) and Neil Warnock (The Agency) were among some of the industry CEOs talking about everything from managing to publishing to digital downloads.
Mongolian band Altan Urag were the first band to play mixing their traditional mongolian style singing with metal.  The next day they ended up getting signed to BMI. Congrats!
Jason Mraz closed the conference on the second day and payed a bunch of his tunes.  He also talked about his music career while sharing stories behind certain hit songs.  Pretty cool stuff.
I was lucky enough to run into Jason while he was cruising around the first day. I told him how I used to watch him play coffee shops around San Diego during my college days and he asked me about the HK music scene. Stoked!
Here’s a video clip that Raffi filmed of Mr.Mraz in action!

Giant Robot Magazine !!!

Recently I was asked to do a “My Perfect Day” article for Giant Robot Magazine (issue 64).  I was super stoked to be asked to contribute to one of my favorite mags of all time.  I’ve been a GR reader ever since my San Diego college days and I’ve always enjoyed the artists, designers, actors, and musicians they covered.  When I was living in California the internet wasn’t the monster that it is today so the best way to keep up with cool japanese anime, HK movies, and music was through the mag.  Check out the latest issue on newstands across the states and selected HMV and Page One stores in HK!

This issue has some great interviews including one with our good friend Andrew Lin!
“My perfect day” included a lot of food, skateboarding, music, toys, and of course fireworks!
My “Top Five” favorite hk bands.
This issue also had a CD review of my latest album “transformer.”  I still got a bunch of pics and blogs to update from the release party and I should be getting back to regular updating my blog after my China trip this weekend.  Thanks for all the support!
